Leadership

Founder & Executive Director

Lawrence Thompson-Drake

Lawrence R. Thompson, is a creative executive, educator, and operations leader with over 25 years of professional experience across the entertainment, hospitality, and youth development sectors.

His career includes leadership and creative roles with world-class organizations such as The Walt Disney Company, Universal, City Cruises, Levy (in partnership with the Chicago Cubs), 𝐄𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐠𝐨, and ClimbZone Chicago. He played key roles on opening teams for major ventures including Eataly Chicago and Disney Quest Chicago, contributing to creative strategy, policy development, and operational design.

Lawrence’s foundation is rooted in formal training, professional cast roles, and collegiate studies in Musical Theater, Recording Engineering, and soon Film Production. His creative career spans work as an actor, singer, writer, and director across Disney and Universal productions, national tours, cruise line shows, Black Ensemble Theater, Chocolate Chips Theatre Company, Urban Theater Company, and more. He is also an Emmy-nominated host of the nationally syndicated, Emmy-winning television series Green Screen Adventures.

At the height of his creative and professional success, Lawrence remained deeply aware that young people from communities like the one he grew up in still lacked access to safe spaces, consistent mentorship, and high-quality creative programming. Too many talented students were navigating instability with minimal resources and few opportunities to explore their gifts.

That reality led him into nonprofit education and out-of-school-time programming—first as an educator, then as a leader. Mentored across for-profit, nonprofit, vendor, and school-based systems, Lawrence developed a clear calling: to ensure that every child, in every community, has the choice to experience a high-quality creative arts program—whether for a semester or for a lifetime.

He knows this path works because it worked for him. A safe place after school became a career. A creative outlet became economic stability. The arts opened doors, paid him to see the world, and built a life. Today, Lawrence’s work is driven by a simple but unwavering belief: access to excellence should never be determined by zip code. The same creative spaces that once gave him safety, purpose, and opportunity now guide his mission to ensure every child has the chance to dream, create, and thrive.

As Nelson Mandela so powerfully stated:

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

That belief defines Lawrence’s leadership—and the legacy he is intentionally building.

Her goal is to use the arts as a bridge—helping young people discover their voice, develop discipline, and expand their vision for what is possible in the arts and beyond.
